E-RIHS.gr (IPERION-CH.GR) FACILITIES

The E-RIHS.gr (Iperion-CH.gr) branch of HELLAS-CH provides access services, horizontally across the engaged labs, through an architecture of three integrated platforms:

1) MoLab: Mobile instruments for in-situ diagnostics

The MObile LABoratory allows users to access state-of-the-art mobile instrumentation for the study and diagnosis of immovable objects, archaeological sites and historical monuments.

2) FixLab: Access to advanced laboratories in the premises of the partners

The FIXed LABoratory provides access to leading infrastructures for sophisticated scientific investigations on samples or whole objects

3) DigiLab: Digital documentation and management of data related to Heritage Science

The DIGItal LABoratory allows users to exploit advanced databases for the documentation of their research and the handling of their data.

FIXLAB-1 Facility, Laser Conservation

Advanced instruments and methodologies customized for the laser-assisted removal of unwanted layers on CH objects and monuments.

  • Unit1: nanosecond and femtosecond UV excimer laser cleaning system,
  • Unit2: NIR, Vis, UV laser cleaning system (multi-harmonics QS Nd:YAG [acquired through HELAS CH], Er:YAG, CO2)
All supported by computer controlled XY positioning translation stages.

MOLAB -1 Facility, Laser Materials Analysis

Portable laser spectroscopic tools for the determination of materials composition and the study of alterations on CH objects and monuments.

  • Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) systems (LMNT-II+ mobile LIBS spectrometer, LIBS microscopy workstation),
  • TriENA system (Diffuse Reflectance, LED/IF, LIBS hybrid spectrometer),
  • Mobile micro-Raman spectrometer (JY Horiba HE-780), Mobile FTIR spectrometer (Alpha, Bruker).

MOLAB -2 Facility, Imaging and Diagnosis

Advanced imaging tools for the study and the diagnosis of CH objects.

  • • Hyperspectral imaging camera, Resonon PICA XC2. 400-1000nm, Spec. Resol. 2.9 nm.
  • • Short wavelength Infrared (SWIR) camera. SWIR Imaging Systems ACUROS-1280-USB3-002, 1280 x 1024, 400-2000nm.

FIXLAB-2 Facility, Archaeogenomics – Paleogenomics

Ancient DNA analysis of archaeological tissue materials

In the context of investigations of diverse questions in the context of archaeological and paleontological sciences. Important services include:

  • Guidelines for ancient biological sample handling,
  • Ancient DNA analysis methods and services for the investigation of various questions in the context of archaeological and paleontological sciences.
  • Instructions to excavators for handling ancient biological findings and ancient DNA analysis services for the study of issues related to archaeological and paleontological sciences.

FIXLAB-3, Facility, Satellite Remote Sensing and Cultural Geographic Information Systems

Documentation and mapping of archaeological landscapes across large areas. Monitor landscape evolution, model the erosion and climate impacts on heritage sites. Detection of ancient structures hidden beneath vegetation or soil. Cultural landscape analysis and risk assessment integrating archaeological and environmental attributes with socio-economic models.

MOLAB -3 Facility, Subsurface geophysical mapping and imaging

Integration of Diverse Geophysical Methods

Integration of diverse geophysical methods (Magnetic Gradiometry, Electrical Resistivity, Ground Penetrating Radar, Electromagnetic Induction, Seismic Mapping) to correlate the subsurface physical properties with buried structural and geological features, illuminating the hidden cultural and natural environment in terrestrial, coastal, and shallow submerged landscapes.

MOLAB -4 Facility, Photogrammetry and LiDAR mounted on UAV’s

Combination of aerial mobility with high-resolution imaging to produce 3D digital records of sites, landscapes, archaeological excavations, and monuments. Monitor the erosion and microrelief, structural deformations, and the integrity of standing monuments. Map the hidden structures beneath forest canopies and compile high-resolution digital elevation models of the cultural landscapes. Integration of photogrammetry and LiDAR to produce photorealistic and metrically accurate 3D heritage models.
